The
Circle of Promise is nationally represented by several phenomenal
African American women. Not only are these women accomplished individuals,
but they are passionate about empowering their communities to help
end breast cancer forever.
René Syler
Author, TV Personality, Breast Cancer Educator, Komen Ambassador
Circle of Promise Co-Chair
René Syler became an official Susan G. Komen
for the Cure® Ambassador in January 2007 after years of volunteering
for the organization and supporting various events as an emcee,
activist and educator. Since January, René has traveled the
country attending Komen Community Challenge events and the 2007
Komen National Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C. This October,
Syler will don her pink as the Chief "Passionista" for Komen for
the Cure's Passionately Pink for the Cure Celebrity Board. Komen's
highly successful Passionately
Pink for the Cure program engages millions in
October who choose a day to wear pink, fundraise for Komen and spread
life-saving messages of early detection.
Syler, former co-anchor of CBS News' The Early Show, interviewed
countless leaders and celebrities, including Laura Bush and Senator
John McCain.
Rene has personal experience with breast cancer. Both her mother
and father are breast cancer survivors. After numerous false alarms,
she made a difficult and courageous decision. In early January of
this year, René underwent a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy
(the removal of both breasts) to help reduce her risk. Today, she
is completely healthy and living life to the fullest. In addition
to being a wife, mother, business woman and tireless breast cancer
activist, Syler is the author of "Good Enough Mother," published
in March 2007.
Syler is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists
and is a recipient of the 2004 Gracie Allen Award for Individual
Achievement in the National Best Anchor category for her breast
cancer series. Syler is married to Buff Parham, and has two children.
